In short: The U.S. Navy relies on a single three-star headquarters to oversee the readiness, training, and administration of its vast aerial assets. Known colloquially as the Air Boss, this commander directs the Naval Aviation Enterprise, ensuring that thousands of aircraft and personnel are prepared for combat operations across the globe.

The Commander, Naval Air Forces (COMNAVAIRFOR) serves as the aviation type commander for all United States Navy units. Based at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, this headquarters is responsible for the materiel readiness and inspection of squadrons, as well as providing fully prepared aircraft carriers and air wings to the fleet. The position is dual-hatted, meaning the incumbent also serves as the Commander of the Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet.

The Naval Aviation Enterprise (NAE) is a massive organization encompassing approximately 3,800 sea-based and shore-based aircraft and 100,000 military and civilian personnel. These assets perform a wide range of missions, including strike and fighter operations, anti-submarine warfare, electronic attack, and search and rescue. The NAE is led by three, three-star leaders: the Commander, Naval Air Forces; the Deputy Commandant for Aviation for the U.S. Marine Corps; and the commander of Naval Air Systems Command.

The origins of this command trace back to October 1919, when the Air Detachment, Pacific Fleet was established. Following various reorganizations throughout the 20th century, including the consolidation of administrative functions directed by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz during World War II, the modern structure took shape. In October 2001, the command was further streamlined when the Atlantic Fleet's aviation counterpart was placed under the authority of the Pacific commander in a lead-follow arrangement, solidifying the current role of the Air Boss.

Today, the staff of about 515 personnel supports a complex network of wings and squadrons, ranging from strike fighter units to strategic communications wings. The current commander, VADM Douglas C. Verissimo, assumed the role in February 2026. By centralizing policy, doctrine, and strategic distribution of air units, the command ensures that the Navy maintains its capability to project power and win in combat environments.
