In short: Founded by French Merchant Navy officers in 1988, Compagnie du Ponant has transformed from a boutique operator into a specialized fleet capable of reaching the North Pole. From surviving a pirate hijacking to pioneering commercial routes through the Northwest Passage, the company represents a unique intersection of luxury and extreme maritime adventure.

Compagnie du Ponant began operations in 1988, established by Philippe Videau, Jean-Emmanuel Sauvé, and other officers from the French Merchant Navy. The company initially launched with a single three-masted barque, Le Ponant, which remains in service today. Over the decades, the firm shifted its focus toward expedition cruising, moving its headquarters from Nantes to Marseille in 2006 following an acquisition by CMA CGM. Ownership changed hands several times, passing to Bridgepoint Capital in 2012 and eventually to Groupe Artémis in 2015.

The company's operational scope expanded significantly in the 21st century. In 2013, the vessel Le Soléal became the first French commercial ship to navigate the Northwest Passage, traveling from Greenland to Russia. This spirit of exploration culminated in the 2021 delivery of Le Commandant Charcot. This vessel, which features a hybrid propulsion system using electricity and liquefied natural gas, is the first cruise ship built with a Polar Class 2 icebreaking hull, allowing it to transport tourists to the North Pole. In 2025, the ship supported the production of a documentary retracing a 1985 expedition by Neil Armstrong and Edmund Hillary.

The company has also navigated significant challenges. In April 2008, the yacht Le Ponant was captured by pirates in the Gulf of Aden while sailing without passengers. The 30 crew members were held for eight days before being released. French military forces subsequently tracked the captors to the village of Jariban, where a raid resulted in the capture of six individuals. More recently, the company faced operational hurdles during the COVID-19 pandemic, including criticism over refund policies and a virus outbreak on the MS Paul Gauguin in 2020. Despite these events, the fleet continues to grow, emphasizing specialized technology like Azipod systems for maneuverability in harsh ice conditions.
