The naval fleet that commanded the largest armada since World War II
In short: Most people view the U.S. Seventh Fleet as a regional Pacific power. However, its reach is far more elastic. During the Gulf War, this fleet commander was pulled from Japan to lead the largest U.S. Navy armada since 1945, shifting from Pacific security to the heart of the Middle East.
The Seventh Fleet was established on March 15, 1943, in Brisbane, Australia, during World War II. It played a pivotal role in the South West Pacific Area, notably participating in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944—the largest naval battle in history. Following the war, the fleet underwent several identity shifts, becoming Naval Forces Western Pacific in 1947 before reclaiming its current name on February 11, 1950, just before the Korean War began.
The fleet's operational history is defined by its versatility. In the 1960s, it was famously nicknamed the "Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club" due to its heavy presence in the South China Sea during the Vietnam War. It managed complex task forces, including the Surface Combatant Force (Task Force 75), which utilized a "naval gun line" concept to bombard enemy positions from deep waters. This allowed larger vessels, like the USS New Jersey with its 16-inch guns, to strike targets while staying clear of coastal shoals.
The most striking example of the fleet's strategic reach occurred in 1990. In response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, the Commander of the Seventh Fleet was ordered to assume command of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. Departing Yokosuka, Japan, the commander joined the staff aboard the flagship Blue Ridge on September 1, 1990. During Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the fleet exercised command over an armada of over 130 U.S. ships and 50 allied ships, before returning to its Asia-Pacific duties in April 1991.
Today, headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan, the Seventh Fleet remains the largest forward-deployed U.S. fleet. Boasting a vast presence of 27,000 sailors and marines, 150 aircraft, and 50 to 70 ships, it manages both high-intensity military actions alongside regional disaster relief.
