The Chilean region where the Andes mountains meet the Pacific Ocean
In short: Stretching across the narrowest part of Chile, the Coquimbo Region is a landscape of extremes. From the high-altitude astronomical observatories of the Elqui Valley to the nomadic fishing traditions of the coast, it is a territory defined by its complex layers of indigenous, Inca, and Spanish history.
The region's identity is rooted in a deep historical succession. Long before Spanish explorers arrived in 1536, the area was home to agricultural communities like the Diaguita and the nomadic Channo people. By the late 15th century, the Inca Empire had incorporated the territory, establishing a governor in the Coquimbo Valley. The very name 'Coquimbo' likely stems from the Quechua words for 'silver' and 'roadside inn,' reflecting its role as a vital transit point.
The Spanish conquest brought significant upheaval. During the 1536 expedition led by Diego de Almagro, tensions between explorers and native leaders resulted in the execution of 30 local leaders. Later, in the 1540s, Pedro de Valdivia's campaigns led to the founding of La Serena, a city that was even destroyed and rebuilt during the colonial era. By the end of the 16th century, the region's demographics shifted again as the Spanish relocated Mapuche groups to the valley to address labor shortages in mines and estates.
Today, the region is a vital economic and scientific hub. It is characterized by its mountainous terrain, where the Andes sit closer to the sea than anywhere else in the country. This geography supports both high-productivity marine ecosystems and world-class astronomical research in the Elqui Valley. While mining—including copper, iron, and the historical production of manganese—remains a pillar of the economy, the region also thrives on agriculture and tourism, supported by landmarks like the 640-meter-long Puclaro Dam.
