The rare athlete who conquered both Gaelic football and the Australian rules football league
In short: Conor McKenna is one of the few elite athletes to master two distinct national sports. After rising through the ranks of Irish Gaelic football, he transitioned to the Australian Football League, eventually becoming only the second male player to secure championship titles in both codes at the highest professional level.
Born in 1996 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Conor McKenna first made his mark in Gaelic football, starring in the 2012 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship. His talent caught the attention of Australian scouts at a 2013 combine, leading him to sign with the Essendon Football Club in 2014. McKenna quickly adapted to the Australian rules game, debuting in 2015 and scoring a goal with his very first kick.
McKenna’s journey was not without significant turbulence. In 2020, he became a focal point of intense media scrutiny after testing positive for COVID-19, an experience he later described as being treated like a piece of meat. The backlash, which included public abuse, prompted him to briefly return to Ireland. During this period, he rejoined the Tyrone county team, playing a pivotal role in their 2021 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship victory. This win cemented his status as a dual-sport success, making him the fourth former AFL player to lift the Sam Maguire Cup.
The pull of the professional Australian league remained, and in 2023, McKenna returned to Australia to join the Brisbane Lions. His second stint proved even more successful than his first. He played in the 2023 AFL Grand Final and was a key member of the 2024 premiership-winning squad. By 2026, he continued to excel, earning the Goal of the Year award and securing a second premiership title with Brisbane. His career stands as a testament to the versatility required to navigate the physical and tactical demands of two of the world's most rigorous field sports.
