Why South America's football governing body is the most exclusive club in the world
In short: As the oldest of FIFA's six continental confederations, CONMEBOL stands apart. With only ten member associations, it is the only fully land-based confederation without island members or external territories. Despite its small size, its teams have dominated global football, securing ten World Cup titles and shaping the sport's history.
Founded on 9 July 1916, CONMEBOL was born in Buenos Aires to organize the first South American Football Championship, now known as the Copa América. This inaugural tournament commemorated the centenary of Argentina's independence. By December 1916, the organization's structure was ratified in Montevideo. While it began with four founding members—Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay—the confederation expanded over the decades, with Venezuela becoming the tenth and final member to join in 1952.
Headquartered in Luque, Paraguay, the organization manages the continent's most prestigious competitions, including the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. Its influence extends beyond its borders; the Copa América is unique among continental tournaments for its willingness to invite teams from other confederations, such as the Asian Football Confederation or CONCACAF. This openness contrasts with the confederation's tight-knit internal structure, which remains the smallest in the FIFA ecosystem.
The organization's history is not without turbulence. In 2015, the confederation faced a significant crisis when multiple leaders, including former presidents Eugenio Figueredo, Nicolás Léoz, and Juan Ángel Napout, were arrested in Zürich on charges of racketeering, money laundering, and corruption. Despite these internal challenges, the confederation remains a powerhouse in international football. Its member nations have collectively claimed ten FIFA World Cups, with Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay leading the charge. Today, under the leadership of president Alejandro Domínguez, the body continues to oversee the development of the sport across the continent, maintaining its status as a central pillar of global football excellence.
