How Constantine II secured Scotland against Viking raids and expansion

Constantine II - Viking Age Scotland’s Greatest King (900-943) · 26:44 · Video: History Time · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the reign of one of Scotland's most powerful early kings. This video examines how Constantine II defended Alba from Norse invaders and navigated complex dynastic conflicts to stabilize the kingdom.

Ruling from 900 to 943, Constantine II faced constant threats from Norsemen and the West Saxons. Early in his reign, the Vikings ravaged Dunkeld and all of Alba, but Constantine successfully repulsed them in Strathearn by his fourth year. He later defeated the Danish king of Dublin and his earls on the Tyne, effectively halting serious Viking attacks.

Beyond warfare, Constantine implemented significant ecclesiastical and civil reforms. In 906, he established the Scottish church, and in 908, he secured the throne of Strathclyde for his brother, Donald. Despite a devastating defeat at the Battle of Brunanburh in 937—where he lost a son and saw many others slain—he survived to eventually resign the crown in old age to become an abbot.
