From Myths to Mutualism: Decoding the Secret Language of Dolphins
In short: Dolphins have captivated human imagination for millennia, moving from mythological figures to subjects of intense scientific scrutiny. This documentary explores whether we are finally on the verge of cracking the code of interspecies communication.
The focus of marine biology has shifted from measuring dolphin intelligence to understanding how that intelligence is actually expressed. Researchers are now investigating the nuances of their social behaviors and cognitive abilities to determine if humans and dolphins share deeper commonalities than previously thought.
The film highlights real-world interactions, such as an account where a group of dolphins appeared to protect a long-distance swimmer from a Great White shark in New Zealand's Cook Strait. Experts featured in the documentary suggest that within 20 years, we may achieve meaningful communication with these marine mammals.
