In short: How does a Mexican footballer transition from the Tercera División to starring in global hits like Ted Lasso? The journey of Cristóbal Fernández involves unexpected career pivots, a sudden injury, and a remarkable return to the sport years after his acting debut.

Born on 27 January 1991, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Cristóbal Fernández's early life was defined by athletics. At age 15, he joined the youth ranks of Estudiantes Tecos. His footballing trajectory took him through the Tercera División de México with Valle del Grullo and a period playing for Guayama in Puerto Rico. However, a knee injury brought his professional football career to an abrupt end in 2014, forcing a redirection of his talents.

Encouraged by his parents, Fernández turned to acting, a passion he discovered during his college years. After relocating to London, he transitioned from independent films to major international productions. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Dani Rojas in the Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso, appearing across its first three seasons between 2020 and 2023. His work grew to encompass major series, such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

The narrative of his career came full circle in 2026. After training with Chicago Fire II, the reserve side for Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire, Fernández sought a return to professional football. Following a trial with the USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive, he signed a professional contract on 12 May 2026. He made his competitive debut for the club on 11 July 2026, appearing as a substitute for Rubio Rubin in the 79th minute of a USL Cup match against New Mexico.

Beyond the screen and pitch, Fernández is a co-founder of the production company Espectro MX Films. His versatility extends to advertising, appearing in State Farm commercials alongside Patrick Mahomes and in Old Spice Swagger campaigns. His sister, Paloma Cinco, also shares a connection to his most famous role, appearing as Maria Rojas in the fourth season of Ted Lasso.
