From Argentine youth systems to World Cup finals and major European transfers
In short: Nico González has navigated a meteoric rise from Argentinos Juniors to the heights of European football. His journey includes winning the Pan American gold medal and playing a pivotal role in Argentina's recent international successes, marked by high-stakes transfers and significant roles on the world's biggest sporting stages.
Born on 6 April 1998, Nicolás Iván González began his professional journey in Argentina. After spending over a decade in the youth system at Argentinos Juniors, he made his professional debut in July 2016 during a Copa Argentina match against Deportivo Laferrere. His early years were defined by rapid progression, helping Argentinos Juniors secure promotion to the Argentine Primera División before he moved to Europe to join VfB Stuttgart on 10 July 2018.
González's time in Germany saw him earn the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award in January 2019, though the club faced relegation at the end of the 2018–19 season. He later moved to Italy, signing with Fiorentina on 23 June 2021. During his tenure in Florence, he achieved significant success, including a brace in the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final against Basel in May 2023, which helped propel the club to the final. His performances eventually led to a high-profile move to Juventus in August 2024, initially on loan with an obligation to buy for €25 million.
On the international stage, González has been a recurring figure for Argentina. He secured a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 2019 and was part of the squad that won the 2021 Copa América. His international career has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks, such as being forced to withdraw from the 2022 FIFA World Cup due to a muscular injury. However, he returned to the spotlight in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, eventually making his first-ever World Cup start in the final against Spain, joining an elite group of players to achieve that feat.
