In short: Once a critical military installation during the Vietnam War, Da Nang International Airport has transformed into Vietnam's third-largest aviation hub. Today, this facility balances its complex history—including a massive dioxin cleanup project—with a rapid modernization drive, aiming to become the country's first smart terminal through cutting-edge digital partnerships.

Originally established as Tourane Airport by the French colonial government in the 1940s, the site was later occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force during World War II. Following the war, the French Air Force utilized the location, eventually laying a NATO-standard 7,800-foot asphalt runway in 1953. By the 1960s, the facility had evolved into a major United States military base known as Da Nang Air Base, expanding to 2,350 acres with two 10,000-foot runways to support various tactical fighter and electronic warfare wings.

The legacy of this military period left significant environmental challenges, specifically high concentrations of dioxin in the soil and sediment due to the handling of herbicides like Agent Orange. A joint Vietnam-US project to remediate this pollution was finally completed in 2018. Despite this heavy history, the airport has undergone a dramatic civilian transition. In 2011, a new terminal opened to boost capacity, followed by a dedicated international terminal in 2017 that cost US$154 million.

Today, the airport serves as a vital gateway for Central Vietnam. It has seen explosive growth, with passenger numbers jumping from 6.7 million in 2015 to 11 million by 2017. While the airport currently holds a 3-star rating from Skytrax, its international terminal has achieved a 5-star rating. Looking ahead, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam has proposed further major renovations for 2026, including the reconstruction of a structurally degraded runway and continued upgrades to its terminal infrastructure to maintain its status as a premier regional hub.
