How a lawyer turned politician became a pivotal architect of Telangana's modern governance strategy
In short: Duddilla Sridhar Babu has spent over two decades shaping the political landscape of Manthani. From his early days as a practicing lawyer to his current role as a senior minister, his career offers a masterclass in navigating the complex, shifting alliances of Indian state politics and regional development.
Born in 1969, Duddilla Sridhar Babu entered the political arena in 1999 following the assassination of his father, the Congress politician Sri D. Sripada Rao. Educated at the University of Delhi and the University of Hyderabad, Babu initially practiced law at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He felt a personal duty to continue his father's work in the Manthani constituency, a commitment that has defined his career for five consecutive electoral terms.
Babu's political journey has been marked by resilience in a volatile environment. In 2009, he stood out as the only Congress MLA re-elected from the Karimnagar district despite significant opposition. His tenure has included various ministerial roles, ranging from Higher Education to Civil Supplies. Notably, he resigned from the cabinet in January 2014 during the intense legislative debates surrounding the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill, which paved the way for the creation of the state of Telangana.
In recent years, Babu has become a central figure in the Congress party's resurgence. He spearheaded the manifesto for the 2023 elections, which centered on six guarantees aimed at achieving a 'Samajika Telangana'—a vision of social justice and inclusive politics. Following the Congress party's victory, where they secured 64 seats, he was sworn in as a minister in December 2023. He now manages critical portfolios including Information Technology, Electronics and Communication, and Industry and Commerce, positioning him as a key architect of the state's future economic and technological trajectory.
