In short: Phu Quoc International Airport was built to unlock the potential of southern Vietnam's beaches. Originally designed to handle 2.5 million passengers annually, the facility is now undergoing a massive expansion to prepare for the APEC 2027 summit and a future of even higher passenger volumes.

Located in the former commune of Dương Tơ, Phu Quoc International Airport serves as the primary gateway to the island's coastal attractions. The facility occupies nearly 900 hectares of land, situated approximately 9 kilometres south of the Phu Quoc special zone's administrative centre. Construction of the site began on 23 November 2008, with an initial investment of VND 3,000 billion by the Airports Corporation of Vietnam. The project, designed by the Singaporean-US consulting firm CPG-PAE, was completed in November 2012 and officially entered operation on 2 December 2012.

The airport's current infrastructure includes a single runway capable of accommodating large-scale aircraft, such as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A350. While its initial capacity was set at roughly 2.5 million passengers per annum, the facility was engineered with a maximum capacity of 7 million passengers per annum. This scale was intended to facilitate the influx of international tourists drawn to the island's beaches.

The airport is currently entering a significant new phase of development. In 2025, ownership was transferred from the Airports Corporation of Vietnam to Sun Group. This transition marks the beginning of a major expansion plan approved for the investor. This upcoming development includes the construction of a brand new runway to complement the existing airstrip, along with new terminals and ground facilities. These upgrades are specifically intended to support long-term island growth and to prepare the infrastructure for hosting the APEC 2027 summit.
