From injury-driven release to Premier League glory: the resilient rise of Daichi Kamada
In short: After being released from a J. League academy due to injuries, Daichi Kamada transformed from a struggling high school captain into a European champion. His journey through Germany, Belgium, and Italy reveals a midfielder capable of finding gaps that opponents simply cannot control.
Daichi Kamada's professional trajectory has been defined by overcoming significant setbacks. During his time with the Gamba Osaka youth system, injuries led to his release from the club. He subsequently returned to school football at Higashiyama High School, where he eventually served as captain. Despite leading a side that finished at the bottom of the league with only two wins in 2014, Kamada's individual prowess was undeniable, finishing as the fourth top scorer in the league with ten goals.
His move to the professional ranks began in 2015 with Sagan Tosu, but his true breakthrough occurred in Europe. After a €2.5 million transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2017, Kamada navigated periods of intense competition and physical challenges, including an elbow injury and a torn ligament. However, his technical ability allowed him to excel, particularly during a successful loan spell at Sint-Truiden in the Belgian Pro League, where he scored 16 goals in 36 appearances during the 2018–19 season.
Kamada's peak years in Germany were marked by major silverware, including the DFB-Pokal in 2017–18 and the UEFA Europa League in 2021–22. His ability to operate in the 'gaps' was noted by managers like Niko Kovač and Adi Hütter. After stints in Italy with Lazio and a move to the Premier League's Crystal Palace in July 2024, he continued his winning tradition, helping Palace secure the 2024-25 FA Cup.
