From Japanese league champion to Premier League mainstay: the rise of Hidemasa Morita
In short: Few players navigate the transition from domestic dominance to European competition with such clinical efficiency. After securing titles in Japan, Hidemseb Morita moved through Portugal's top flight to the English Premier League, establishing himself as a vital defensive presence for both club and country.
Hidemasa Morita's professional ascent began in earnest in 2018 when he joined Kawasaki Frontale. His impact was immediate; following a professional debut in the Japanese Super Cup against Cerezo Osaka on 10 February 2018, he earned his first league start against Vegalta Sendai on 14 April. This period proved foundational, as he helped secure the J1 League title in 2018 and repeated the feat in 2020, the latter year seeing him named to the J-League Best Eleven.
Morita's trajectory took him to Europe in early 2021, signing with Portuguese side Santa Clara. He made an instant impression, scoring a decisive 89th-minute winner against Rio Ave during his debut on 25 January 2021. His success in the Primeira Liga led to a permanent transfer to Sporting CP on 1 July 2022. At Sporting, he reached the highest levels of club football, making his Champions League debut against Eintracht Frankfurt on 7 September 2022.
On the international stage, Morita has been a consistent figure for the Japan national team. His first call-up arrived in September 2018, stepping in for injured players Ryota Oshima and Hotaru Yamaguchi. While injuries forced him to withdraw from the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, he returned to the international fold in March 2021, scoring his first national team goal in a 14–0 victory over Mongolia. Following his tenure in Portugal, Morita joined Hull City on a two-year contract in July 2026.
