From a loan to the Champions League: the ascent of Hiroki Itō
In short: In 2021, Hiroki Itō was a loanee playing for a second team in Germany's fourth tier. Today, he is a key figure for Bayern Munich and the Japanese national team, having navigated a career defined by rapid tactical versatility and significant physical setbacks.
Hiroki Itō’s trajectory through German football is a study in rapid progression. After rising through the youth ranks of Júbilo Iwata and a brief loan at Nagoya Grampus, he arrived at VfB Stuttgart in June 2021. Though initially assigned to their second team in the Regionalliga Südwest, coach Pellegrino Matarazzo quickly promoted him to the first team. His impact was immediate, highlighted by a 6–0 DFB-Pokal victory against BFC Dynamo and his first Bundesliga goal on 26 November 2021 against Mainz.
His success at Stuttgart, which included a crucial role in their 2023–24 runner-up finish and Champions League qualification, paved the way for a high-profile move to Bayern Munich. In June 2024, Bayern triggered a release clause estimated at €30 million to sign the defender until 2028. However, his tenure in Munich has been complicated by injury. A metatarsal fracture during the 2024 preseason sidelined him for much of the first half of the 2024–25 season, followed by a second metatarsal fracture in March 2025 that ended his season prematurely.
Despite these physical challenges, Itō has remained a fixture for the Japan national team. Since his senior debut against Paraguay on 2 June 2022, he has been a consistent presence, including selection for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His ability to operate as a centre-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder has made him a vital tactical asset for both club and country.
