How a massive swampland reclamation project created the largest town in Florida by population
In short: Davie, Florida, is a unique municipality that balances modern suburban life with a distinct Western aesthetic. Originally carved out of reclaimed wetlands at the turn of the 20th century, this Broward County town has grown into a major hub within the Miami metropolitan area, defined by its history and geography.
The land that currently constitutes Davie was once part of a vast, untamed wetland. At the dawn of the 1900s, the state of Florida initiated a massive project to drain and reclaim 156 square miles of this swampy terrain. Robert Parsell Davie, a businessman from outside the state, recognized the potential in this newly accessible land and purchased 44 square miles to establish farms. The settlement was initially named Zona, but the residents later renamed the town in honor of the man who facilitated its development.
Long before this agricultural transformation, the area was home to the Tequesta people. Archaeological evidence, including graves and campsites found at Pine Island Ridge, suggests that indigenous presence in the region dates back between 5,000 and 7,000 years. Following the arrival of Europeans, the Tequesta population dwindled due to colonization. By the late 18th century, those who remained either fled to Havana alongside the Spanish or integrated into the Seminole tribes that had moved into the area.
Today, Davie occupies a total area of 35.7 square miles, with the vast majority being land. Despite its urban growth, the town maintains a cultural connection to its past, with horseback riding remaining a common activity and many historic buildings reflecting a Western architectural style. The climate is classified as tropical monsoon, characterized by warm winters and humid, hot summers. As of the 2020 census, the town reached a population of 110,320, solidifying its status as the largest town in Florida by population. It serves as a principal component of the broader Miami metropolitan area, supported by a diverse educational landscape that includes public schools, Catholic institutions, and specialized academies.
