How a small-town pastor built a global media ministry from a California church
In short: David Jeremiah transformed from a local pastor into an international broadcast figure. His journey spans decades of leadership, from founding a church in Indiana to guiding a major Southern Baptist congregation in California, all while navigating personal health crises and building a massive multimedia platform for his religious teachings.
Born in 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, David Jeremiah followed in his father's footsteps to become a prominent evangelical leader. After completing his education at Cedarville College and Dallas Theological Seminary, he began his ministry in 1969 by establishing the Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. During his twelve-year tenure there, he grew the congregation from just seven families to over 1,300 members, while also launching his first foray into televised religious programming, known as The Bible Hour.
In 1981, Jeremiah moved to Southern California to lead what is now known as the Shadow Mountain Community Church. Under his guidance, the institution expanded significantly, affiliating with the Southern Baptist Convention and establishing multiple satellite locations. He also founded Turning Point for God in 1982, a multimedia ministry that started with local reach and expanded into a global broadcast operation by the turn of the millennium. This platform has served as his primary vehicle for sharing his message, earning him recognition such as the National Religious Broadcasters Hall of Fame Award in 2020.
Jeremiah’s life has also been shaped by significant personal challenges, most notably a battle with lymphoma diagnosed in 1994 and again in 1998. His recovery, which involved surgical intervention and stem cell therapy, became the subject of his book, When Your World Falls Apart. Beyond his pastoral and media work, he is a prolific author of dozens of books on theology and Christian living. Today, he remains active in speaking engagements and continues to influence a wide audience, supported by a family deeply involved in his ministry and professional sports analysis.
