The Australian deathcore band that broke the Top 40 ceiling
In short: In the heavy metal world, breaking into the mainstream is a feat of endurance. Thy Art Is Murder achieved the impossible by becoming the first extreme metal band to ever crack the Top 40 of the ARIA Charts, fueled by a relentless touring schedule and a polarizing, technical sound.
Formed in Blacktown, Sydney, in 2006 by teenagers around 15 years old, Thy Art Is Murder quickly built a reputation for high-energy performances. Their 2008 EP, Infinite Death, served as a global breakout, gaining notoriety for its technical deathcore sound and controversial, sacrilegious lyrics. The release was a commercial success, reaching number 10 on the AIR Charts and sparking an explosion of international popularity via Myspace.
The band's trajectory was marked by significant internal friction and lineup shifts. In 2008, original vocalist Brendan van Ryn departed—a move later described by his successor, CJ McMahon, as being due to attitude and vocal limitations. Following a year-long search, McMahon joined in 2009. The group also saw the dismissal of founding guitarist Gary Markowski in 2010 following allegations of theft, leading to a restructuring of their instrumental lineup and a move toward a more death metal-inspired sound.
Their 2012 album, Hate, was a historic milestone, debuting at No. 35 on the ARIA Charts. This achievement was bolstered by a grueling touring cycle; the band was noted for being among the hardest-working on the road, often selling out venues across North America and Europe. Despite critical mixed reviews—with some publications awarding the album a 1 out of 10—the band secured major distribution deals with Nuclear Blast and continued to chart on the US Billboard 2000 with subsequent releases like Holy War and Dear Desolation.
