The gated city that powers the world's largest oil company
In short: Dhahran is a city of enclosures. Much of its landscape is defined by gated communities, from the massive Saudi Aramco residential camp to military and university zones. This strategic hub in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province serves as the administrative heart of the world's largest oil company.
The city's modern identity is inseparable from the discovery of commercial oil. Following a 1933 agreement between Saudi Arabia and Standard Oil of California, the first commercially viable well, Dammam Well No. 7 (the "Prosperity Well"), was drilled in the 1930s. This discovery led to the establishment of the Arabian American Oil Company, now known as Saudi Aramco, which has maintained its headquarters in Dhahran for 90 years.
The urban layout of Dhahran is unusual due to its high concentration of gated areas. Notable sites comprise the King Abdulaziz Air Base, the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Saudi Aramco's residential camp and headquarters. While the Aramco camp was originally designed to provide Western-style comfort and separation for expatriate workers, it has evolved into a multi-ethnic mosaic of various nationalities.
The region faces extreme climatic conditions. Located near the Persian Gulf, Dhahran experiences some of the world's hottest and most humid summers, with temperatures exceeding 40 °C. In July 2003, the city recorded a heat index of 79 °C when the temperature hit 42 °C and the dew point reached 35 °C. Winters are virtually frost-free, though temperatures can drop to as low as −5 °C.
Dhahran's strategic importance has made it a focal point of international relations and conflict. It was the site of a 1940 Italian Royal Air Force strike and later hosted a United States airbase. During the Gulf War, the city suffered a significant loss of life when an Iraqi Al-Hussein missile struck a U.S. Army barracks on February 25, 1991, killing 28 American reservists.
