The desert oasis where ancient legends and global oil wealth converge
In short: Deep in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province lies Hofuf, a city of immense contradictions. It is a legendary landscape of star-crossed lovers and ancient trade, yet it sits at the doorstep of the world's largest land-based oil field.
Hofuf, also known as Al-Hasa, serves as the heart of the Al-Ahsa Governorate. While it is not a provincial capital, it stands as the second-largest city in the region, trailing only Dammam. The city is part of a vast, fertile oasis area where the population of the wider region reaches approximately 600,000 people. This landscape is famous for its massive date production, specifically the highly regarded khalasi variety.
The city's history is a complex tapestry of shifting empires and religious transitions. For much of its past, Hofuf was a center for Twelver Shi'a scholarship. It functioned as an Ottoman administrative headquarters from 1871 until 1913, when it was taken by the Wahhabi movement under Ibn Saud. Following the 1932 establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the city's name was formalized as Hofuf. Today, the population is roughly split between Shi'a and Sunni Maliki residents.
Beyond its political shifts, Hofuf is a place of deep cultural myth. Local legend identifies the city as the site where the iconic lovers Laila and Majnoon were buried. It is also tied to the folklore of the Queen of Sheba. This historical depth is matched by industrial significance; the city is the nearest urban center to the Ghawar oil field, one of the most significant conventional oil fields on Earth. Even its infrastructure reflects global connections, as its local airport served as a base for the French Air Force during the 1991 Gulf War.
