In short: Long before it became the heart of global oil production, this region was the legendary Dilmun civilization. From a mythical garden where predators did not kill to the massive Ghawar oil field, the Eastern Province holds a unique place in both human myth and modern industry.

The Eastern Province is the largest province in Saudi Arabia by area, encompassing the entire east coast of the kingdom. While much of the landscape is desert—including the vast Rub' al Khali, which covers over half the province—the region's history is rooted in the ancient Dilmun civilization. Flourishing from the late 4th millennium BC until approximately 538 BC, Dilmun was a prosperous trading hub linking Mesopotamia with the Indus Valley. In Sumerian mythology, Dilmun was described as a paradisiacal state where disease and pain were absent, a narrative some scholars believe may have inspired the Garden of Eden story.

The region's economic significance transitioned from ancient maritime trade to modern petroleum dominance. It serves as the primary platform for the kingdom's oil exports, housing the Ghawar field in the Al-Ahsa Governorate—the largest onshore oil field in the world. The province also contains the Safaniya field, the largest offshore oil field globally. This industrial might is anchored by Saudi Aramco, which achieved a historic $2 trillion market capitalization in December 2019, and Jubail Industrial City, the world's largest industrial city.

Today, the province is a massive demographic and logistical hub. As of 2022, its population exceeded 5.1 million, with over a third residing in the Dammam metropolitan area. The region is highly interconnected, linked to Bahrain via the 25 km King Fahd Causeway and bordering several nations including Kuwait, Iraq, and the UAE. Beyond energy, the Al-Ahsa Oasis remains a vital agricultural site, famous for its massive annual date harvests.
