The secretive private school founded by Kanye West that banned chairs and cleaning supplies
In short: Donda Academy operated with extreme secrecy, requiring parents and staff to sign non-disclosure agreements. Located in Simi Valley, California, the institution enforced a strict aesthetic and unconventional rules, including a ban on cleaning chemicals, trash cans, and furniture like chairs, before its official closure in mid-2024.
Established in 2020 by Kanye West, the academy was a private Christian institution serving students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Initially based in Calabasas, it later moved to Simi Valley. The school maintained a low profile, with policies that mandated secrecy regarding its location and internal practices. Community members were required to wear black uniforms designed by West, and the school did not seek accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, as California law does not mandate such status for private entities.
The school's internal environment was marked by highly unusual requirements, as detailed in a 2023 lawsuit filed by former staff. Allegations included a prohibition on color and artwork in classrooms, a ban on Nike and Adidas products, and the restriction of all cups and bowls to a gray color. Furthermore, the facility lacked standard amenities like janitorial services, school nurses, and tables, forcing students to eat sushi while sitting on the floor. West reportedly forbade the use of the building's second floor due to a fear of stairs, and cleaning chemicals were prohibited, leading to safety concerns such as the storage of medical equipment above a microwave.
The institution faced significant instability following West's antisemitic comments in late 2022, which prompted the resignation of staff members and the withdrawal of students. While the school briefly closed and reopened in October 2022, its reputation suffered, and its high-profile basketball team, the Donda Doves, saw players depart after showcase invitations were rescinded. By the time the California Department of Education officially listed the school as closed on June 30, 2024, the academy had become a subject of intense public scrutiny regarding its educational philosophy and operational standards.
