A baseball nation finds its footing on the football pitch
In short: In a country where baseball is king, association football has long lived in the shadow of the diamond. For decades, the Dominican Republic national team struggled for relevance, but recent results suggest a significant shift in the Caribbean sporting landscape.
The Dominican Republic's journey in international football began formally with the founding of the Federación Dominicana de Fútbol in 1953. However, their competitive debut was humbling: in May 1967, they faced Haiti for a spot in the Mexico Summer Olympics. The team suffered a crushing 14–0 aggregate defeat across two legs, losing 8–0 at home and 6–0 away. For years, the national team remained largely inactive or underperforming. A victory against Puerto Rico, ending 5–0 at the Panama-hosted Central American and Caribbean Games, marked their initial win in March 1970 after a long hiatus. Throughout the late 20th century, success remained elusive; while they achieved a respectable third-place finish in the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games, they struggled to break into the elite tiers of CONCACAF competition.
This lack of historical success is often attributed to the cultural dominance of baseball, which diverts significant interest and resources away from football. However, the landscape changed dramatically during the 2024–25 CONCACAF Nations League season. The Dominican Republic won all of their matches against Bermuda, Dominica, and Antigua and Barbuda in League B. This perfect run earned them promotion to League A and secured their first-ever qualification for a continental tournament: the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
As of June 5, 2025, the team holds a FIFA World Ranking of 139th. While they have never appeared in a FIFA World Cup, their recent trajectory marks a turning point from regional obscurity to becoming a competitive force in North and Central American football.
