Dublin means black pool, yet Irish speakers say hurdle ford
English Dublin traces to Middle Irish for a dark tidal pool where the Poddle met the Liffey behind today's castle gardens. Modern Irish prefers Baile Atha Cliath, town of the hurdled ford, naming a crossing near Father Mathew Bridge instead of that black pool.
Two early settlements shared the site. Vikings founded Dyflin about eight hundred forty-one on the Poddle, borrowing the name of an earlier Christian Duibhlinn, while a Gaelic Ath Cliath sat farther upriver. Fish traps from bay digs push human presence back some six thousand years, and Ptolemy's map around one hundred forty AD may record a nearby Eblana polis. The Irish state treats nine hundred eighty-eight as the official foundation year, marked with a millennium festival in nineteen eighty-eight.
Under Olaf Guthfrithson in the mid-to-late tenth century the Norse town became a commercial hub and largely held until the Anglo-Norman landing of eleven sixty-nine. King John ordered Dublin Castle begun in twelve oh four; by the late thirteenth century the walled city held about eight thousand people. Georgian expansion after seventeen hundred briefly made Dublin the British Empire's second city and Europe's fifth, with more than one hundred thirty thousand residents. Guinness opened in seventeen fifty-nine and linen exports from Ireland leapt from one and a half million yards in seventeen ten to almost nineteen million by seventeen seventy-nine.
The Acts of Union in eighteen hundred shifted Parliament to London and slowed industrial takeoff—Ireland lacked coal and shipyards that powered Belfast—yet by eighteen fourteen Dublin still outnumbered every English town except London. After independence in nineteen twenty-two it became capital of the Irish Free State, renamed Ireland in nineteen thirty-seven. The twenty twenty-two census counted five hundred ninety-two thousand seven hundred thirteen in the city council area and about one point two six million including suburbs. Black pool and hurdle ford still name the same estuary capital.
