From business manager in Dubai to the heights of Indian cinema
In short: Before becoming one of Malayalam cinema's highest-paid stars, Dulquer Salmaan was managing business in Dubai. After a brief stint in IT, he swapped spreadsheets for the screen, choosing a difficult path to avoid the shortcuts of fame.
Born in Kochi in 1983 to actor Mammootty, Salmaan’s trajectory was far from a predetermined cinematic destiny. After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in business management, he worked as a business manager in Dubai and held a position at an IT firm. His transition to acting was deliberate; he attended a three-month course at the Barry John Acting Studio in Mumbai to prepare for a career he felt required earning his way through merit rather than lineage.
His 2012 debut in the crime film Second Show set the stage for a rapid ascent. By 2014, he had achieved a major breakthrough with Bangalore Days, a film that grossed approximately ₹500 million (US$5.2 million). This period marked his establishment as a leading figure in Malayalam cinema, complemented by successes in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films. His versatility is evidenced by his ability to dub in multiple languages, a skill he utilized for the Telugu hit Sita Ramam.
Beyond acting, Salmaan has built a diverse professional portfolio. He is a producer through his company, Wayfarer Films, which launched with the 2020 film Varane Avashyamund. His business interests have historically included a dental business chain in Chennai, a car trading web portal, and a directorship at Motherhood Hospital in Bangalore. This multifaceted career continues to see him recognized on global lists, including a 2017 appearance on Forbes India's Celebrity 100.
