In short: Petscop presents itself as a long-lost PlayStation game, documented by a player named Paul. What begins as a simple creature-capturing puzzle game descends into a dark, cryptic exploration of childhood trauma and family secrets. For thirty months, viewers were left wondering if the haunting footage was real or elaborate fiction.

Created by Tony Domenico and running from March 2017 to September 2019, Petscop masquerades as a Let's Play series. The protagonist, Paul, discovers an unfinished game developed by the fictional company Garalina. While the initial levels involve capturing creatures known as pets, Paul soon uses a code to access the 'Newmaker Plane,' a dark, subterranean world that serves as the backdrop for a disturbing narrative involving kidnapping, abuse, and the concept of 'rebirthing.'

The plot centers on a man named Marvin, who kidnapped his daughter, Care, in 1997, believing she was the reincarnation of his missing childhood friend, Lina. The game appears to be a tool designed by a developer known as Rainer to confront Marvin with his past. As the series progresses, the boundaries between the game and reality dissolve; Paul discovers that the game's landmarks correspond to real-world locations, and he eventually falls under the same surveillance or captivity that defined Care's life. The narrative is intentionally fragmented, with Domenico omitting much of the concrete plot to foster a sense of complex, hidden events occurring just out of the viewer's sight.

Petscop draws heavily from experimental influences, including the film Inland Empire and the web series Marble Hornets. It also incorporates controversial real-world allusions, such as the 2000 death of Candace Newmaker during rebirthing therapy—a reference Domenico later expressed regret over including. Despite its dark themes, the series garnered significant critical acclaim, with The New Yorker labeling it the 'king of creepypasta.' By the time the series concluded, it had transcended its status as a mere internet story, culminating in a public screening at Brooklyn's Spectacle Theater in 2024.
