In short: Israel's southernmost city is more than a desert resort. It is a window into the violent tectonic forces shaping our planet. Located at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, Eilat occupies a rift valley that continues to widen, driven by the slow, relentless drift of continental plates.

Eilat is situated at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, a deep, narrow body of water that serves as the northeastern arm of the Red Sea. Geologically, this region is part of a massive, complex rift system. This system includes the great Wadi Aqaba–Dead Sea–Jordan Rift, which extends hundreds of miles, and the Red Sea itself, which separates the Arabian and African tectonic plates.

The formation of this landscape is the result of millions of years of crustal movement. While the initial separation of Africa and Arabia began roughly 55 million years ago, the specific trough forming the Gulf of Aqaba is a much younger feature, created during a second phase of tectonic activity approximately 3 to 4 million years ago. This process is far from finished; current estimates suggest the plates are moving apart at a rate of 0.59 to 0.62 inches per year.

Evidence of this ongoing transformation is visible in the region's seismic activity, the presence of hot brines in the seafloor troughs, and extensive volcanism occurring over the past 10,000 years. The rugged mountains surrounding Eilat are composed of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, some over 540 million years old, which were once covered by layers of Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine sediments. Today, these ancient formations provide a dramatic backdrop to the modern city, serving as a reminder of the deep-time forces that continue to reshape the earth beneath our feet.
