In short: Carved from Ondo State in 1996, Ekiti State is a rugged, upland region in southwestern Nigeria. Beyond its distinctive landscape of rocky outcrops and tropical forests, it holds a unique reputation as a national intellectual powerhouse, boasting the highest concentration of professors and educated citizens in the country.

The name Ekiti is derived from the Yoruba word for mound, reflecting the state's undulating terrain of hills and ridges that rise over 250 meters above sea level. This geography, which transitions from southern tropical forests to northern savannah, has shaped the region's history for centuries. While oral traditions offer competing theories regarding the origins of the Ekiti people—some linking them to royal migrations from Ile-Ife and others emphasizing the presence of aboriginal populations—the region has long been a distinct cultural entity.

Historically, the Ekiti people maintained a confederacy of districts, each led by an Owa or king. This political independence was tested during the 19th century, notably during the Ekiti-Parapo or Kiriji War, a conflict against the Ibadan imperialist movement that ended in a British-brokered stalemate. Following the colonial era and the subsequent restructuring of Nigeria, the area was part of the Western Region and later Ondo State before finally becoming an independent state in 1996.

Today, Ekiti is celebrated for its commitment to learning. It is widely recognized as having the highest number of professors in Nigeria, a distinction that has earned it the moniker of a beacon for the black race in academic circles. This focus on education is supported by a network of institutions, including five universities such as the Ekiti State University and the Afe Babalola University, which continue to drive the state's development alongside its agricultural economy of yams, rice, and cocoa.
