Why is this Nigerian state known as the salt of the nation?
In short: Formed in 1996, Ebonyi State is a South-East Nigerian region defined by its agricultural prowess and unique geological features. Known as the salt of the nation due to its historic salt lakes, the state balances a humid tropical climate with a complex history of regional restructuring and rapid infrastructure development.
Ebonyi State was established in 1996 by the federal military government under General Sani Abacha, carved from the Abakaliki division of Enugu State and the Afikpo division of Abia State. Its history is deeply intertwined with the broader evolution of Nigerian states; prior to its creation, the area had transitioned through the Eastern Region, the East Central State, and eventually the split of Anambra and Imo states. Today, it is governed from its capital, Abakaliki, and is divided into thirteen local government areas across three senatorial zones.
The state's nickname, the salt of the nation, stems from significant salt deposits found at the Okposi and Uburu Salt Lakes. Beyond this, the economy is anchored in agriculture, with the state serving as a leading producer of rice, yams, and cassava. While it possesses mineral resources like lead, zinc, and limestone, large-scale commercial mining remains limited. Recent years have seen a push for modernization, characterized by the construction of the Ebonyi State International Airport and a notable network of flyovers and concrete roads initiated under former governor Dave Umahi.
Geographically, Ebonyi is defined by the Abonyi River and its tributaries, which flow through a landscape transitioning from southern forests to northern forest-savanna mosaics. The climate is humid and tropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons. Culturally, the region is diverse, home to various Igbo and Korring dialects. The population, which was estimated at nearly 2.9 million in 2016, is predominantly Christian, supported by a dense network of tertiary institutions including Ebonyi State University and several specialized colleges of health and agriculture.
