From Champions League finals to homelessness: the dramatic fall of Emmanuel Eboué
In short: Once compared to the legendary Garrincha by Arsène Wenger, Emmanuel Eboué climbed the heights of European football. Yet, the former Arsenal and Galatasaray star saw his fortune vanish, eventually facing a life of poverty and profound personal loss.
Emmanuel Eboué’s ascent began in the ASEC Mimosas academy in Abidlam, leading to a move to Belgium's KSK Beveren in 2002. His performances in Belgium earned him a transfer to Arsenal in 2004. During his tenure in North London, Eboué became a versatile figure, playing as both a right-back and a winger. His career highlights included the 2006 UEFA Champions League Final and a 2005 FA Cup victory. He earned 79 caps for the Ivory Coast between 2004 and 2013. His early professional years also included three seasons at the Belgian club Beveren.
However, his time at the top was marked by volatility. While he enjoyed significant success in Turkey, winning five domestic honours with Galatasaray, his career was also defined by physical and professional struggles. Persistent ankle injuries plagued his Arsenal years, and by 2011, he moved to the Turkish side for €3.5 million. He transitioned to a right-wing role during the 2007–08 season. His time in Turkey saw him share the pitch with national teammate Didier Drogba.
Despite scoring notable goals in the Champions League, his later years were marred by a one-year football ban in 2016 following a failure to pay a former agent. Beyond the pitch, Eboué’s life took a devastating turn. In 2017, a move to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus failed due to blood issues discovered during medical testing. By late 2017, he revealed he was facing homelessness and poverty, citing a difficult divorce and bad investments managed by his former wife. By 2026, he claimed to have lost everything, describing a fractured relationship with his children and a complete loss of his former wealth. A one-year ban from football-related activities began in March 2016. He also experienced a period of training with the Hungarian club Ferencváros in 2017.
