From academy coach to Champions League semi-finalist: the rise of Erik ten Hag
In short: Before managing giants like Manchester United and Ajax, Erik ten Hag built his reputation through the grueling ranks of Dutch football academies. His journey from a centre-back to a tactical heavyweight involves historic victories, record-breaking wins, and a high-stakes tenure in the English Premier League.
Born in Haaksbergen in 1970, Ten Hag's professional journey began as a centre-back for clubs including Twente, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk, and Utrecht. He retired from active play in 2002 at the age of 32. His transition to management was gradual, starting in the Twente academy where he oversaw the U17 and U19 teams before moving into assistant roles under managers like Fred Rutten and Steve McClaren.
Ten Hag's managerial ascent gained momentum with successes at Go Ahead Eagles and Bayern Munich II. However, it was his tenure at Ajax, starting in 2018, that defined his elite status. He led the club to three Eredivisie titles and a historic run to the 2018–19 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, famously defeating Real Madrid 4–1. While managing Ajax, he secured 100 victories in only 128 games, setting a record for the quickest manager in the league to do so.
His move to Manchester United in 2022 brought both silverware and significant struggle. While he secured the EFL Cup and FA Cup in successive seasons, the club faced difficulties in the Premier League and European competitions. After a period of poor results and a low league standing, he was dismissed in 2024. His career continues with his appointment as the head coach for Bayer Leverkusen for the 2025–26 season, though his tenure there was marked by a dismissal after only three matches in September 2025.
