How a shadowy Iranian commander navigated decades of regional conflict and persistent rumors
In short: Esmail Qaani, the long-serving deputy who succeeded Qasem Soleimani as commander of the IRGC Quds Force, has spent his career operating in the shadows of Middle Eastern proxy warfare. From fighting drug cartels in the 1990s to facing recent, unverified reports of his own death, his tenure remains defined by deep uncertainty.
Born in the pilgrimage city of Mashhad in 1957, Esmail Qaani joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in 1980. During the Iran–Iraq War, he commanded the 5th Nasr Division and the 21st Imam Reza Armored Brigade, where he first encountered Qasem Soleimani. Following the war, Qaani pivoted to Iran’s eastern border, focusing on regional priorities such as combating drug smuggling and supporting the Northern Alliance against the Taliban in Afghanistan. By 1998, he was appointed deputy commander of the Quds Force, overseeing financial disbursements to paramilitary groups like Hezbollah.
Qaani’s career has been marked by intense international scrutiny and sanctions. In 2012, the U.S. Treasury added him to the Specially Designated Nationals list for his role in funding regional allies. Later, in 2022 and 2024, Canada and the European Union imposed their own sanctions, citing his oversight of weaponry transfers to proxies, including the Houthi movement. His public rhetoric often targeted U.S. leadership, particularly during the Trump administration, where he frequently warned of the costs of American military involvement in the Middle East.
The commander's later years were shrouded in persistent rumors regarding his status. In October 2024, following an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, speculation emerged that Qaani had been injured, killed, or even detained by Iranian authorities over suspected security breaches and potential intelligence leaks. Despite reports in June 2025 suggesting he had been killed in Israeli airstrikes during the Twelve-Day War, a video surfaced on June 24, 2025, showing him participating in a public demonstration in Tehran, effectively refuting the claims of his death and confirming his continued presence in public life.
