In short: In less than half a century, an Emirati telecom giant transformed from a domestic provider into one of the world's largest internet hubs. Today, it doesn't just connect phones; it manages massive data centers, satellite systems, and international stakes in some of Europe's biggest telecommunications brands.

The UAE's market leader, Etisalat (currently e&), originated in 1976 via a joint-stock venture involving local entities and International Aeradio Limited. By 1991, Federal Law No. 1 granted the corporation rights to provide wired and wireless services while also allowing it to issue licenses for telecom equipment. This effectively established a monopoly that allowed the firm to scale rapidly, increasing its exchange lines from 36,000 in 1976 to over 737,000 by 1998. The UAE government maintained a 60% ownership stake in the firm starting in 1983. This structure supported its growth into a major contributor to federal development programs outside of the oil sector.

The company's expansion is marked by aggressive international investment and infrastructure milestones. It became the first operator in the Middle East and North Africa to launch a 5G network in May 2018. In 2024, it set a world record for live 5G speed, reaching 30.5 Gbps through carrier aggregation of high-band and mid-band spectrums. Beyond infrastructure, e& has diversified into non-telecom units like submarine cable laying (eMarine), smart card manufacturing (Ebtikar), and data clearing house services. The company also operates points of presence in several major global cities including London and Paris. Its network infrastructure supports roaming across 186 different countries.

Its global footprint is significant but faces complex geopolitical scrutiny. The company holds a 14.6% stake in Vodafone Group as of 2023, leading to warnings from the British government regarding national security risks. Additionally, its €2.2 billion acquisition of PPF telecoms assets faced an anti-subsidy investigation by Brussels in June 2024 over concerns that state funds might provide an unfair competitive advantage in the EU market. In July 2024, e& announced a $5.95 billion sale of its Vodafone investment. It also holds a significant 50.01% stake in the PPF Telecom Group.
