From 1930s wireless messages to a digital banking giant
In short: Globe Telecom isn't just a mobile network; it is a century-long evolution of Philippine connectivity. From its origins as a California-based wireless franchise to becoming the country’s most-subscribed network, Globe has transformed from simple radio signals into a massive ecosystem of fintech, lifestyle brands, and 5G infrastructure.
Globe's roots trace back to December 8, 1928, when the Philippine Legislature granted Act No. 3495 to the Robert Dollar Company for wireless long-distance messages. This franchise was transferred in 1934 to Globe Wireless Limited, which was formally incorporated on January 15, 1935. The company underwent significant expansion throughout the mid-20th century, merging with Mackay Radio & Telegraph and Philippine Press Wireless in 1965 to form Globe-Mackay Cable and Radio Corporation.
The modern corporate structure took shape through strategic partnerships and acquisitions. In 1974, Ayala Corporation began investing in the company, eventually becoming a principal shareholder alongside Singtel (Singapore Telecom). A pivotal shift occurred in 2001 when Globe acquired Islacom from Deutsche Telekom, later integrating its fixed-line assets into Innove Communications. These moves allowed Globe to diversify beyond mobile services into broadband and international communications systems.
Today, Globe is a multi-faceted tech giant with 63.1 million subscribers as of November 2025. It has moved aggressively into non-core sectors: it launched G-Xchange in 2004 to power the GCash brand, formed BPI Globe BanKO to create a mobile microfinance bank, and established Kickstart Ventures in 2012 to incubate technopreneurs. While it faces stiff competition from PLDT and Dito Telecommunity—which recently outpaced Globe in specific Opensignal speed tests—Globe remains a dominant force with 5G coverage spanning over 3,000 locations.
The company's evolution reflects a broader shift in Philippine telecommunications: moving from state-granted wireless privileges to a consumer-centric digital economy. By integrating financial services (GCash), lifestyle content (Anima and LiveMNL), and infrastructure sharing with partners like ABS-CBN, Globe has transitioned from a utility provider to a primary architect of the nation's digital life.
