How a clipper ship captain built a California city from a land grant
In short: Before it was a bustling hub of manufacturing and military importance, Fairfield was a Mexican land grant. Discover how a 19th-century sea captain transformed a struggling settlement into the seat of Solano County, and how the landscape itself shaped its growth.
The history of Fairfield begins long before its 1856 founding. The area was originally inhabited by the Suisun (Patwin) Native Americans. In the 1830s, a Mexican governor issued the Suisun Rancho land grant to Chief Solano, also known as Sem Yoto. This settlement faced significant hardship, as smallpox caused many Native American residents to die. In 1842, a Mexican military officer named Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo acquired the land grant.
The modern city was established by Robert Waterman, a clipper-ship captain who purchased the land and named the town after his Connecticut hometown. Waterman played a decisive role in the region's political geography; in 1858, he successfully campaigned to move the Solano County seat from Benicia to Fairfield. To secure this victory, he donated 16 acres of land for the construction of county buildings.
Fairfield's development accelerated through several key milestones. The city was officially incorporated in 1903. During World War II, the establishment of Travis Air Force Base to the east spurred significant growth. Later, the 1957 completion of the Monticello Dam, located 15 miles north, provided essential irrigation for tens of thousands of acres, boosting the production of livestock, fruit, and cereal crops.
Today, the city sits between the Coast Ranges and Suisun Bay, with a population of 119,881 as of the 2020 census. Its economy is highly diversified, spanning healthcare, manufacturing, and retail. As a key administrative heart for Solano County, the area functions as a prominent manufacturing centre, home to both the Anheuser-Busch brewery and Jelly Belly candy factory.
