How a Hull furniture shop slogan became the name of a global pop duo
In short: Formed in 1982 by Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, Everything but the Girl evolved from sophisti-pop origins to electronic icons. After a 24-year hiatus, the duo returned with their highest-charting album ever, proving that their creative partnership remains as vital today as it was four decades ago.
Everything but the Girl emerged from the University of Hull, where Thorn and Watt met while both were signed as solo artists to Cherry Red Records. They adopted their distinctive name from a slogan used by Turner's Furniture, a local shop located on Beverley Road. Their early sound was characterized as sophisti-pop, a style blending jazz influences with pop sensibilities, placing them alongside contemporaries like Sade and The Style Council. Their debut album, Eden, released in 1984, reached number 14 on the UK Albums Chart.
The duo's trajectory shifted significantly in the mid-1990s. Following Watt's life-threatening struggle with the rare autoimmune disease eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis in 1992, the band moved toward a more electronic sound. This pivot culminated in the 1994 release of Amplified Heart, which featured a remix of their track 'Missing' by Todd Terry. The song became a massive international success, peaking at number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995. They continued this electronic exploration with the 1996 album Walking Wounded, which reached number four on the UK charts.
After going inactive in 2000, the pair pursued solo projects, writing books, and managing record labels. Despite long-standing doubts about a reunion, they surprised fans by announcing a new album, Fuse, in 2022. Released in 2023, the record reached number three on the Official UK Album Chart, marking the highest-charting success of their career. In 2025, the duo returned to live performance, playing intimate shows that spanned their 40-year history, signaling a new chapter for a band that has successfully navigated the frontiers of pop music for decades.
