The cinematic soundtrack to an apocalypse that never happened
In short: In 1997, a Canadian band released an album so atmospheric it inspired the visual language of one of cinema's most famous zombie films. It is a sprawling, instrumental journey through derelict cities and corrupt governments, crafted from field recordings, tape loops, and handmade artifacts.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor released F A ∞ in 1997 as a radical departure from traditional song structures. Recorded at Montreal's Hotel2Tango, the album features lengthy movements that blend Western-themed melodies with high-volume noise and 'eschatological tape loops.' The project was so influential that director Danny Boyle cited it as the primary mental soundtrack for his 2002 film 28 Days Later, using its sonic palette to evoke a sense of societal collapse.
The album exists in two distinct physical forms that offer different experiences. The original 1997 LP was limited to 500 hand-packaged copies, featuring handmade jackets and inserts like a crushed Canadian penny and a silk-screened image for blues musician Reverend Gary Davis. In contrast, the 1998 CD release—pushed by the Chicago label Kranky—nearly doubled the music's runtime from two tracks to three movements, adding new sections and removing certain loops found on the vinyl.
The work is deeply rooted in specific locations and narratives. The track 'East Hastings' references Vancouver’s blighted Downtown Eastside, while 'The Dead Flag Blues' opens with a spoken-word description of a corrupt city from an unfinished screenplay by guitarist Efrim Menuck. Even the title itself serves as a technical blueprint: it refers to the band's specific guitar tuning and the loop at the album's conclusion.
Despite its experimental nature, critics have lauded the work for balancing 'beauty and emotion.' It has been ranked among the top albums of the 1990s by Pitchfork and recognized as a 'genuine classic' by NME. The band even trimmed their lineup from an unwieldy 15 members down to ten specifically to prepare for these recordings, ensuring a focused delivery of their apocalyptic vision.
