Faisalabad's eight bazaars still radiate from a Union Jack plan

Laid out in the eighteen nineties as Lyallpur for lieutenant-governor James Broadwood Lyall, the Chenab Colony headquarters put a clock tower at the centre with eight roads echoing the Union Jack. In nineteen seventy-nine Pakistan renamed the textile hub Faisalabad for Saudi Arabia's King Faisal.

Architect Ganga Ram shaped the planned town after colonisation officer Popham Young picked the site for the lower Chenab irrigation scheme, the largest canal colony in western Punjab. A rail link from Wazirabad finished in eighteen ninety-five, and by eighteen ninety-six the surplus grain town joined the British rail net. Lyallpur District formed in nineteen oh four; the agricultural college that became the University of Agriculture opened in nineteen oh six. Population reached nineteen thousand five hundred seventy-eight by nineteen eleven, and the municipal committee dated to nineteen oh nine.

Partition in August nineteen forty-seven sent Hindus and Sikhs toward India while Muslim refugees from East Punjab poured in, helping the city grow roughly sixfold in the following decade. Nineteen thirties industry already spanned textiles, food processing, grain crushing, and chemicals; the nineteen eighties brought foreign textile investment and remittances that funded big infrastructure. Nicknamed the Manchester of Pakistan for cloth mills, it remains Punjab's primary industrial centre and the country's third-most populous city. One twenty thirteen estimate put local GDP near forty-three billion dollars, with claims of over twenty percent of national GDP and about twenty point five billion dollars in average annual nominal output.

The urban district sits about one hundred eighty-six metres above sea level in the Rachna Doab between Chenab and Ravi, which flow roughly thirty and forty kilometres away. The lower Chenab canal waters about eighty percent of cultivated land. Climate straddles semi-arid and humid subtropical regimes, with about six hundred fifty millimetres of rain yearly, monsoon peaks in July through September, a record two hundred sixty-four point two millimetres on five September nineteen sixty-one, and extremes from forty-eight degrees Celsius to minus four. From canal colony grid to fabric capital, the clock tower still sets the compass.
