In short: Before the era of modern mobile gaming, one Facebook application redefined how we interact with friends and brands. FarmVille pioneered the freemium model, using social interconnectedness to drive massive engagement, but its addictive mechanics and pressure to spend real money sparked intense debate among critics and designers.

Launched by Zynga in 2009, FarmVille was a pioneer of the 'freemium' gaming model. While the game was free to play, players could use real-world currency to purchase Farm Cash to accelerate progress. This mechanism allowed players to bypass the laborious tasks of plowing, planting, and harvesting, or to use tools like a biplane for 'instant grow' features. The game's economy was built on a dual-currency system: Farm Coins, which could be earned through gameplay, and the more difficult-to-acquire Farm Cash.

The game's success relied heavily on Facebook's API, which allowed players to exploit social interconnectedness. By adding neighbors—even those who were not Facebook friends—players could visit farms to perform actions, send gifts, or join 'co-ops.' This social pressure often created a dilemma: players could either use the help of friends or pay for Farm Cash. This design was not without controversy; game designer Jonathan Blow criticized the game for encouraging users to exploit their friends and creating an atmosphere of negativity.

At its peak in March 2010, FarmVille reached 83.76 million monthly active users, with daily active users peaking at 34.5 million. However, the game's popularity declined after 2011. The original version was eventually discontinued on December 31, 2020, because Facebook ceased support for the Adobe Flash Player. While the franchise expanded into sequels like FarmVille 2 in 2012 and FarmVille 3 in 2021, the original's legacy remains tied to its role as one of the first major social network games to integrate massive brand partnerships, ranging from McDonald's to Lady Gaga.
