The deep-rooted lineage behind Pakistan's former leader and cricket icon Imran Khan
In short: Imran Khan’s family history weaves together two distinct Pashtun lineages: the Niazi tribe of Mianwali and the Burki clan of Jullundur. From ancestral lion-slayers to sporting legends and civil servants, his heritage spans centuries of migration, political ambition, and a deep, enduring connection to the city of Lahore.
Imran Khan’s paternal roots lie with the Niazi Pashtuns, who settled in Mianwali during the fifteenth century. The family’s sub-clan, the Shermankhel, traces its name to a legendary ancestor who reportedly killed a lion with his bare hands. His father, Ikramullah Khan Niazi, was a civil engineer who remained fiercely anti-colonial, while his grandfather, Muhammad Azeem Khan Niazi, was a physician. The family haveli, Azeem Manzil, remains a central site for his extended relatives, though internal politics have occasionally strained these bonds, with some cousins supporting rival political parties.
Maternally, Khan descends from the Burki Pashtuns, who migrated from Kaniguram to Jullundur around 1600 AD. This clan, which includes the Sufi warrior-poet Pir Roshan, established twelve fortified villages known as bastis to preserve their culture. Following the 1947 Partition of British India, the family relocated to Zaman Park in Lahore. This neighborhood, named after Khan's grand-uncle, became the heart of his upbringing. His mother, Shaukat Khanum, played a pivotal role in his life, teaching him Islamic history and moral lessons that later inspired him to found the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre.
The Burki clan is also synonymous with Pakistan’s sporting history. Beyond Khan’s own career, nearly forty members of the tribe have played first-class cricket, including his cousins Javed Burki and Majid Khan, both of whom captained the national team. This tradition of excellence extends to other fields, with family members serving as senior civil servants, surgeons, and entrepreneurs. Whether through the political legacy of his Niazi ancestors or the sporting and philanthropic spirit of the Burkis, Khan’s life is deeply anchored in the complex, interconnected history of these two prominent families.
