In short: Rising from the Wuling range in China, Fanjingshan functions as a biological island. Its dramatic vertical shifts in climate and terrain have preserved rare life forms that have existed since the era of the dinosaurs. This isolated sanctuary remains the only place on Earth where several unique species still survive today.

Fanjingshan, located in Guizhou Province, is a striking geological formation that reaches 2,570 meters above sea level. While the surrounding landscape is dominated by karst terrain, the mountain itself is composed of metamorphic rock. This distinct geology, combined with a vast altitudinal range of over 2,000 meters, creates a vertical stratification of vegetation. The mountain hosts three primary zones, ranging from evergreen broadleaf forests at the base to a mix of conifers and scrub at the highest elevations.

The mountain’s relative isolation has allowed it to function as a biogeographic island, fostering a high degree of endemism. It serves as a refuge for ancient species that trace their origins back to the Tertiary period, a timeframe spanning from 65 million to 2 million years ago. Today, the property is home to 46 locally endemic plant species and several unique vertebrate and invertebrate species. Among its most famous inhabitants are the Fanjingshan Fir and the Guizhou Snub-nosed Monkey, both of which are found nowhere else in the world.

Beyond its role as a biological sanctuary, Fanjingshan supports immense biodiversity, including 3,724 recorded plant species and 450 vertebrate species. It contains the largest primary beech forest in the subtropical region and serves as a critical distribution center for gymnosperms. Because many of these populations are isolated and restricted to small ranges, ecological connectivity is essential for their survival. The area is now managed under a unified system by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration to ensure these rare, globally threatened species continue to thrive in their protected habitat.
