In short: Fantasyland began as an original themed area at Disneyland, defined by fairy tale motifs and iconic architecture. Over decades, it has undergone massive expansions and renovations, shifting from Renaissance aesthetics to immersive, story-driven environments. Beyond the rides, it holds a time capsule, hidden history, and a legacy of constant reinvention.

Fantasyland serves as a cornerstone of Disney parks worldwide, rooted in the company's animated fairy tale films. At the original Disneyland, the area is anchored by the Sleeping Beauty Castle, which functions as the park's primary icon. The space has evolved significantly since its 1955 debut. A major 1983 renovation, known as New Fantasyland, replaced the original Renaissance-style façades with a Bavarian village aesthetic, better aligning the architecture with the European settings of the source fairy tales. This project, directed by Dale Burner, expanded the area to improve guest flow and introduced new attractions like Pinocchio's Daring Journey.

The area's history is punctuated by unique milestones and curiosities. In 1995, a time capsule was buried in front of the castle, containing historical artifacts and scheduled for opening in 2035. Entertainment within the land has also shifted over time; while the 'Fantasy in the Sky' fireworks began in 1956, the tradition of a 'flying' character—Tinker Bell—did not start until 1961, with former circus aerialist Tiny Kline performing the first flight. Other attractions have come and gone, such as the Mickey Mouse Club Theater and the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship, reflecting the company's continuous efforts to update its offerings.

Between 2010 and 2014, the land underwent another massive expansion. This phase saw the closure of Mickey's Toontown Fair to make way for Storybook Circus, which integrated characters from the 1941 film Dumbo. The expansion also introduced the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a roller coaster featuring a unique ride system where vehicles swing independently in response to track geometry. While some concepts, such as an area based on The Chronicles of Narnia, were cancelled due to expired licensing agreements, the final result was a highly immersive environment that continues to blend classic storytelling with modern interactive technology, such as the 2024 Smellephants on Parade game.
