In short: In 1859, during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, a group of prospectors grew so frustrated with the distribution of mining claims that they established their own settlement. They wanted an equitable system for everyone—a desire for fairness that gave birth to the town of Fairplay.

Located at an elevation of 9,953 feet in the South Park grassland basin, Fairplay serves as the county seat of Park County. The town's identity is deeply rooted in its history as a gold mining settlement. Gold and silver deposits remained extractable throughout the mid-1900s, despite the region's origins during early placer mining.

The name 'Fairplay' reflects a specific historical grievance: early prospectors were receiving generous mining claims, leaving others behind. Settlers who wanted a more balanced distribution of resources chose this name to signal their commitment to equity. The town was officially incorporated on November 15, 1872, and its spelling was standardized from 'Fair Play' to 'Fairplay' in 1924.

Today, the town preserves its heritage through South Park City, an open-air museum featuring relocated historic structures that recreate the early days of the Colorado Gold Rush. It also hosts the World Championship of Burro Racing. This ultra-marathon burro race covers a 29-mile route over rough terrain with a 3,000-foot elevation gain to the summit of Mosquito Pass. The race follows a historic path once used by Father John Lewis Dyer for circuit riding and mail delivery.

Demographically, Fairplay is a high-altitude community with a subarctic climate characterized by long, windy winters and large temperature swings between day and night. It remains a quiet town where the majority of streets were only paved in 2005.
