A New League Challenges the Status Quo of European American Football
In short: Born from internal friction within the European League of Football, the European Football Alliance launched in 2026 with a mission to prioritize financial transparency and club-led governance. By adopting an NFL-style ownership model and focusing on homegrown talent, the league seeks to redefine the professional landscape of the sport.
The European Football Alliance (EFA) emerged from a period of intense organizational conflict. In early 2024, several teams from the European League of Football (ELF) formed an association to advocate for greater financial transparency and equal treatment. Tensions peaked when members criticized the league’s management, particularly the influence of CEO Zeljko Karajica, whose ownership of multiple franchises raised concerns about competitive fairness. By July 2025, this group reorganized as the EFA, eventually leading to the resignation of ELF leadership, including Commissioner Patrick Esume, due to irreconcilable differences.
The EFA officially launched its inaugural season on May 15, 2026, with a structure modeled after the NFL, where club owners hold direct control over league governance. Operating through EFA Football Services GmbH, the league is jointly owned by participating teams, the European Football Alliance e.V., and external investors like the Gandler Sports Group. This structure aims to ensure stability, a goal the EFA emphasized when it ended cooperation talks with the ELF in January 2026, citing the latter's failure to secure financial viability.
Sporting regulations in the EFA are designed to cultivate local talent rather than relying heavily on international imports. Each team maintains a 65-player roster, but game-day participation is strictly limited to four players from the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Japan, and six from other international regions. The remaining spots are reserved for homegrown players, with some franchises managing talent territories that span multiple countries. The 2026 season concluded with the Nordic Storm defeating the Munich Ravens 48–28 in the championship game, marking a significant milestone for the league’s first year of competition.
The league’s future continues to evolve, with expansions into Italy and the United Kingdom planned for 2027. Despite early departures and the emergence of a rival competition, the American Football League Europe, the EFA has solidified its presence through broadcast partnerships across Europe and North America. Under the leadership of president Markus Kuhn, appointed in August 2026, the league remains focused on its unique blend of American-style rules and European development, setting the stage for its second season.
