NFL television rights are the most expensive in the history of American entertainment
In short: The National Football League has transformed from a post-WWII rising star into a global media juggernaut. Today, its broadcast contracts represent the most lucrative sports rights on Earth, with networks paying staggering sums to secure a piece of the most-watched programming in the United States.
The economic scale of the NFL's media presence is immense. From 2023 until 2033, four primary broadcasters—The Walt Disney Company, Fox Corporation, NBCUniversal, and Paramount Skydance—will spend US$110 billion collectively for game rights. This represents a massive leap from the $39.6 billion paid for the 2014–2022 period. This revenue is not just for the league's coffers; the NFL distributes television earnings equally among all teams, regardless of their performance on the field.
As of February 2019, each franchise received $255 million annually from these contracts, a 150% increase from the $99.9 million distributed in 2010. This influx of capital has fundamentally reshaped the industry, with national media revenue accounting for approximately 67% of the league's total football-related revenue as of July 2023.
The landscape is also shifting toward digital platforms. Amazon Prime Video turned into the inaugural streaming platform to secure complete rights for a set of games through Thursday Night Football in 2022. More recently, Netflix entered the fray, signing an initial three-year deal for two Christmas games in 2024, which was extended in 2026 to include more games in its schedule.
To manage these massive assets, the NFL employs a 'flexible scheduling' policy. This allows the league to move games between time slots or networks to maximize viewership. While Sunday afternoon games were traditionally split by conference affiliation between CBS and Fox, a 2023 policy change introduced 'cross-flexing,' allowing games to be reassigned to balance high-profile matchups across networks.
