In short: On the planet Arrakis, water is more than a necessity; it is the foundation of law, religion, and economy. The Fremen have engineered an entire civilization around its preservation, developing technologies to recycle every drop of moisture from their own bodies.

The Fremen are a fictional people created by Frank Herbert for his Dune universe. Originally known as the Zensunni Wanderers, this religious sect retreated to the desert planet Arrakis thousands of years before the first novel. Over centuries, they adapted to one of the most hostile environments in the galaxy, developing a culture based on extreme water conservation. This survivalist ethos was inspired by Herbert's research into real-world groups like the Bedouin and San peoples, as well as the Kalahari's 'black foot' people.

Their technology is a marvel of closed-loop engineering. Fremen wear 'stillsuits,' specialized body-enclosing garments designed to capture moisture from perspiration, urine, feces, and even breath. These suits use a micro-sandwich fabric to dissipate heat while filtering waste into catchpockets for drinking. A well-maintained suit can sustain an individual in the desert for weeks without external water. Furthermore, they utilize 'windtraps' to condense atmospheric humidity and 'deathstills' to reclaim moisture from corpses.

This scarcity has dictated their social structure and economy. Water is used as a form of currency, with personal ownership designated by 'water rings.' Their society is organized into underground communities called sietches, led by a naib who wins leadership through ritual combat. Even their biology is shaped by the environment; Herbert suggests they may have adapted physiologically so that their blood clots almost instantly to prevent fluid loss.

The Fremen's history is complex and often manipulated. While they are depicted as hardy survivors, much of their mythology was actually engineered by the Bene Gesserit Missionaria Protectiva through 'religious engineering.' This involved planting contrived myths and prophecies—including a messiah legend—to ensure the order could eventually exploit or influence the population for its own ends.
