How the Targaryen dynasty’s internal collapse became a television phenomenon
In short: House of the Dragon chronicles the brutal succession war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Set nearly two centuries before Game of Thrones, this prequel explores the decline of the Targaryen house, featuring a sprawling cast of dragonriders, political schemers, and the legendary beasts that once defined their power.
The series is based on material from the 2018 book Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin. Development began in 2015 when HBO executives approached Martin about potential spin-offs while Game of Thrones was still in production. By September 2019, a project tracking the beginning of the end for the Targaryen family was nearing a pilot order, with Ryan Condal co-creating the series.
The narrative centers on the conflict between the Blacks, who support the claim of Rhaenyra Targaryen, and the Greens, who installed her half-brother Aegon II Targaryen on the Iron Throne. This struggle is fueled by competing interpretations of the late King Viserys I Targaryen's final wishes. The show explores the complex dynamics of the royal family, including the roles of figures like the Rogue Prince Daemon, the Hand of the King Otto Hightower, and the Sea Snake Corlys Velaryon.
Beyond the political maneuvering, the series highlights the central role of dragons in Westerosi history. Characters are bonded to specific beasts, such as Rhaenyra’s Syrax, Daemon’s Caraxes, and the formidable Vhagar, claimed by Aemond Targaryen. The show’s production has been marked by significant milestones, including a record-breaking premiere watched by over 10 million viewers and multiple award nominations, including a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Drama.
The series structure has evolved across its run. Following the first season, showrunner Miguel Sapochnik departed, leaving Condal as the sole showrunner. The show has maintained a steady release schedule, with the second season premiering in 2024 and a third season following in 2026. A fourth and final season is currently in development, with an expected release in 2028.
