From non-league obscurity to European champion: the rapid rise of striker Garry Birtles
In short: Garry Birtles transformed from a £2,000 non-league signing into a two-time European Cup winner in just two years. His journey from Long Eaton United to the pinnacle of continental football remains one of the most remarkable rapid ascents in the history of the English professional game.
Born on 27 July 1956, Garry Birtles spent his early career in the non-league circuit with Long Eaton United before Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough secured his signature for a modest £2,000 fee. Initially deployed as a winger, Birtles made his debut in March 1977. However, his breakthrough did not arrive until September 1978, when the departure of Peter Withe and the failure of Steve Elliott to establish himself provided an unexpected opening. Birtles seized the opportunity, scoring his first goal for the club against Liverpool in the 1978–79 European Cup.
The 1979–80 season cemented his status as a premier forward. Birtles played in every First Division match for Nottingham Forest that year, contributing 12 goals and providing the crucial assist for John Robertson’s winning goal in the European Cup final against Hamburg. His domestic form was equally impressive, as he helped the club secure the 1979 League Cup, scoring twice in the final against Southampton. By May 1980, his reputation had grown sufficiently to earn him the first of three senior England caps, debuting in a victory over Argentina.
In October 1980, Birtles moved to Manchester United for a £1.25 million fee. His tenure there included 28 appearances in his first season, though he struggled to replicate his prolific Forest form until the 1981–82 season, when he netted 11 league goals. He eventually returned to Nottingham Forest for a second spell, where he demonstrated his versatility by playing at centre-half while remaining a consistent threat, notably scoring 15 league goals in the 1983–84 season. He concluded his career with Notts County and Grimsby Town, retiring with over 400 professional league appearances to his name.
Birtles’ career is defined by his adaptability and the sheer speed of his transition to elite status. While his time at Manchester United is often viewed through the lens of his high transfer fee, his overall impact across multiple clubs and positions highlights a resilient professional. His legacy remains tied to the golden era of Nottingham Forest, where he was named the club's Player of the Year for the 1978–79 season.
