How Gayatri Gopichand carved her own path in the shadow of a badminton legend
In short: Born into a household where badminton was a way of life, Gayatri Gopichand initially followed her father’s footsteps. Yet, she eventually forged a distinct identity by shifting from singles to doubles. Her rise to international prominence, marked by historic performances, proves she is far more than just a famous name.
Born on March 4, 2003, Gayatri Gopichand grew up in an environment defined by elite sport. Her father, Pullela Gopichand, is a legendary figure in Indian badminton, known for winning the All England Open and later coaching Olympic medallists like Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu. Her mother, PVV Lakshmi, is also an accomplished athlete, holding the title of eight-time national badminton champion and having competed as an Olympian. Despite this pedigree, Gayatri’s entry into the sport was her own choice, a decision her father supported with pride.
Gayatri’s early career was marked by rapid progress at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy. By age 15, she was the top-ranked Under-17 player in India and became the youngest member of the Indian badminton contingent for the 2018 Asian Games. While she initially focused on singles, recurring injuries and coaching advice led her to transition to doubles in 2021. Partnering with Treesa Jolly, she found immediate success, with the pair winning their first title at the India International Challenge and reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious All England Open in 2022.
The 2022 All England Open performance was a watershed moment for Indian badminton. Entering as reserves, Gayatri and Treesa upset high-profile opponents, including the Tokyo Olympics champions and World silver medallists, to become the first Indian women’s doubles pair to reach the tournament's semi-finals. This breakthrough solidified her standing on the international circuit. Today, she continues to compete at the highest levels, having secured medals at the Commonwealth Games and the BWF World Championships, successfully stepping out from her father's shadow to establish her own legacy in the sport.
